Guest Lecturer: Scott Duffey

Updated: May 6, 2021

Scott Duffey is an illustrator and designer who previously studied and graduated at Chester University. Following university, Scott initially found it difficult to find a job in the industry and stressed how important it was to further develop skills such as animation, web design, anything that could possibly help in the industry even while working jobs that are not related to his degree.

Scott currently works as a Creative Director for Listen Creative. The lecture started with Scott explaining what his day job was and what kind of different projects he has worked in, within these there were packaging for dog food, animating Peter Rabbit for a BBC children’s app, working on food packaging for companies such as Geeta and Eat Real, designing websites, etc.

While working at Pizza Express, Scott created a business with his wife Louisa called “Toucan Tango”, where he sells things such as gift cards and greetings cards and then wholesales them to different shops around the UK. Most of these are print-screened illustrations.

Throughout the years, Scott has also worked with several different bands to create posters for concerts and different gigs. He mentioned that these were a great way to stretch his imagination and that dude to the current climate, he has not been able to do as many as he normally would.

Scott and his wife now also own another side-business called Suup, which is a screen-printing studio located in New Brighton.

One of the aspects I was most inspired by and stood out the most for me was the presentation that Scott created. The typography used mixed with the illustrations as well as the ‘choose your own adventure’ style of presenting I felt was very strong and very creative. It made for quite an interactive and fun lecture.

Within all of his work, these were some of the ones that stood out most for me:

Once again, I found it very relieving to hear that, even with someone with such a talent for illustration and design as Scott found it difficult to initially find a job relating to the degree after leaving University. I found this to be one of the most interesting guest lectures thus far, as I really admire and love the work Scott has done. It has also inspired to want to continue working as much as I can and possibly pick up on new skills that will help me build up my portfolio.
